BMAT 2006 Section 2 Question 24

The statements are about respiration.
1 Aerobic respiration releases more energy per unit mass of glucose than anaerobic respiration.
2 Aerobic respiration in muscles causes an oxygen debt to occur.
3 Aerobic respiration forms carbon dioxide as the only waste product.
4 Reduced aerobic respiration will limit the active uptake of mineral ions in the kidney tubules.
5 When there is little oxygen available to muscles only anaerobic respiration occurs.
6 Anaerobic respiration forms lactic acid as the only waste product.
Which statements are correct?

Answer:

1 – Correct
The statement itself is correct. This require pre-requisite knowledge of aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.

2 – Wrong
Anaerobic respiration does not require oxygen therefore causing an oxygen debt.

3 – Wrong
Water is also formed as a waste product by aerobic respiration.

4 – Correct
Active uptake (or active transport) require ATP to work. ATP is formed by aerobic respiration. If aerobic respiration is reduced, then there will less active transport.

5 – Wrong
Since there is still some oxygen, aerobic respiration together with anaerobic respiration will occur.

6 – Correct
The statement itself is correct. This require pre-requisite knowledge of anaerobic respiration

1, 4 and 6 are correct. Hence, E is the answer.
