BMAT 2009 Section 2 Question 24

The equation gives y in terms of x. y = 5 (ˣ⁄₂ – 3 )² -10 Rearrange the equation to give an expression for x in terms of y

Answer:

We first need to remove the (-10) from the RHS
y + 10 = 5 (ˣ⁄₂ – 3 )²

We need to remove the 5 and the 4 from the RHS
 (y + 10) =  (ˣ⁄₂ – 3 )²
       5

Square rooting on both sides,

± √y + 10 = ˣ⁄₂ – 3
       √5

Removing the 3 from the RHS
±  √y + 10 + 3 = ˣ⁄₂
       √5

Removing ¹⁄₂ from RHS,

2 [ ±  √y + 10  + 3]= x
            √5

x = ± 2 √y + 10 + 6
              √5
