BMAT 2009 Section 2 Question 2

Which of the following could take part in an addition polymerisation?
1 CHI₃
2 C₂₄H₄₈
3 C₃H7Br
4 C₄H₆Cl₂
5 C₈H₁₂Cl₄

Answer:

Only molecules that contain a double bond can participate in an addition polymerisation. Such molecules have twice as many other atoms as there are carbon atoms. e.g. C₃H₆, C4H

The only molecules that contain twice as many other atoms as carbon atoms in the molecule are C₂₄H₄₈, C₄H₆Cl₂, C₈H₁₂Cl₄
