An electric fan heater contains a heating element and a motor that drives the fan. The circuit
diagram is shown.
At first, the switch is open and the current in the motor is 0.40 A.
The switch is then closed.
Which of the following statements is/are correct after the switch is closed?
1 The current in the heating element added to the current in the motor is 0.40 A.
2 The voltage across the heating element is 240 V.
3 The resistance of the circuit is smaller than it is with the switch open

Answer:


When the switch is closed, the circuit becomes a parallel circuit.
When the switch is closed, some of the current will flow to the heating element. So the current in the motor would decrease. Statement 1 is wrong.
Voltage remains the same across components in parallel circuits. So the voltage across the heating element would be 240 V. Statement 2 is correct.
Overall resistance of a parallel circuit is smaller so statement 3 is correct.
