BMAT 2015 Section 2 Question 14

Cycloalkanes are alkane compounds that are in a ring shape. Some examples of cycloalkanes are given below. Which statement about these compounds is correct?

Answer:

A – They clearly do not have the formula CnH2n+2. They have the formula CnH2n
e.g. Cyclohexane has 6 carbons and 12 hydrogen

B – They do not react with bromine water. ALKENES react with bromine water.

C – They are saturated compounds. As you can see, all carbon atoms have the maximum number of hydrogen atoms attached to them. Also, all alkanes also have single bonds, meaning they are are fully saturated.

D – They burn in excess oxygen to produce CO₂ and H₂O.

E – This is incorrect as they have similar properties to each other and have the same general formula, CnH2n

F – They are not giant covalent bonds
