BMAT 2013 Section 2 Question 26

The addition of N0 as a catalyst to a mixture of S02 and 02 speeds up the following reaction: S02 + ½02 S03
The following reactions could be involved in the process.

  1. N2 + 02 2N0
  2. ½N2 + 02 N02
  3. N0 + ½02 N02
  4. N02 N0 + ½02
  5. S02 + N0 S03 + ½N2
  6. S02 + N02 S03 + N0

Which one of the following shows the most likely course of the overall reaction?

Answer:

We know that a catalyst always remains unchanged at the end of a reaction. This means that at the end of the reaction, NO must be recovered. Hence, reaction 6 will definitely be one of the reactions.

Since 6 is only mentioned in option B, B is the answer.
