BMAT 2011 Section 2 Question 26

An impurity in petroleum is dimethylsulphide, CH 3SCH3. When dimethylsulphide is burnt in an excess of air, which one of the following balanced equations represents the reaction that takes place?

Answer:

Reacting with air essentially means that it is reacting with oxygen.

Different elements present in CH₃SCH₃: C, H and S

Carbon will form its oxide, Hydrogen will form its oxide (water) and sulphur will form its oxide.
There would be three products: CO₂, H₂O AND SO₂

Therefore, the answer could only be E.
