BMAT 2008 Section 2 Question 16

A right-angled triangle is shown. Calculate the area of the triangle.

Answer:

This is rather an easy question.
Since the triangle is right-angled, we can use the formula: Area = 1/2 x base x height

Area = 0.5 x (4 – √6) x (6 + √6)

Area = 0.5 x [4 (6 + √6) – √6 (6 + √6)]

Area = 0.5 x [24 + 4√6 – 6√6 + 6]

Area = 0.5 x [18 – 2√6]

Area = 9 – √6
