BMAT 2004 Section 2 Question 2

The right-angled triangle shown has horizontal and vertical sides measuring (4 + √2) cm and
(2 – √2) cm respectively. Calculate the area of the triangle.

Answer:

Area of a right angled triangle = 1/2 x base x height

0.5 x (4 + √2) x (2 – √2)

0.5 x [4 (2 – √2) + √2 (2 – √2)]

0.5 x [(8 – 4√2) + (2√2 – 2)]

0.5 x [8 – 4√2 + 2√2 – 2]

0.5 x [6 – 2√2]

(3 – √2) is the answer
