BMAT 2004 Section 2 Question 14

Plugs of cotton wool containing concentrated aqueous ammonia and concentrated hydrochloric acid are placed at opposite ends of a tube, at room temperature. A white ring of solid ammonium chloride forms nearer the hydrochloric acid.Which of the following can be deduced from this experiment?

Answer:

Lighter molecules diffuse faster than heavier molecules.

Since the mass of an ammonium molecule is less than that of a hydrogen chloride molecule, it will diffuse across the tube more than the hydrogen chloride molecule.

Hence, the white ring is formed near the concentrated hydrochloric acid.
