BMAT 2012 Section 2 Question 17

Consumption of alcohol leads to an increase in dilute urine production by reducing the level of the hormone ADH.
Which of the following are correct statements about alcohol and/or ADH?
1 ADH travels in the bloodstream.
2 There is a positive correlation between the level of ADH and the production of dilute urine.
3 Increased ADH leads to increased formation of dilute urine.
4 A reduced level of ADH could lead to dehydration.

Answer:

1 – Since ADH is a hormone, it has to travel in the bloodstream. So this is correct.

2 – ADH causes water to be reabsorbed into the bloodstream from the kidney. Hence, urine produced would be concentrated and not dilute.

3 – Same concept. Increased ADH will cause increase in concentrated urine and not dilute urine.

4 – This is correct. ADH is released by the pituitary gland to reabsorb water from the kidney to prevent dehydration. If ADH is reduced, dehydration can occur.

The answer is C.
