BMAT 2004 Section 2 Question 26

The list below describes some events that occur during nuclear division. Indicate, by shading the appropriate circles on the answer sheet, which events occur during mitosis and which occur during meiosis.

Answer:

i) Mitosis
In mitosis, the daughter nuclei are always genetically identical to the parent cells or nucleus.

ii) Both
In order to carry out nuclear division, both processes must involve all chromosomes being replicated.

iii) Meiosis
Gametes can only be produced by meiosis. Since gametes are haploid, they must be formed by meiosis as mitosis only forms diploid cells.

iv) Meiosis
Haploid nuclei are only formed by meiosis.

v) Both
Genetic material always appears as distinct chromosomes in both processes.
