Two resistors R1 and R2 are connected in series with a cell. Resistor R1 has twice the resistance of resistor R 2. Six statements about this circuit are given below.
1 The voltage across each resistor is the same.
2 The voltage across R1 is twice that across R 2.
3 The voltage across R2 is twice that across R 1.
4 The current is the same in both resistors.
5 The current in R1 is twice the current in R 2.
6 The current in R2 is twice the current in R 1.
Which pair of statements is correct?

Answer:

The resistors are in series.

1 – Wrong
Voltage is different in each component of the circuit.

2 – Correct
Resistance of R₁ is twice that of R₂.
Since V ∝ R, voltage in R₁ will also be twice that of R₂.

3 – Wrong
Voltage of R₂ is half of R₁

4 – Correct
The current across all components in a series circuit will be the same.

5 – Wrong
Current is the same in both resistors.

6 – Wrong
Current is the same in both resistors.

Since statements 2 and 4 are correct, C is the answer.
